The Centenary Exhibition
The Fondation Louis Vuitton is exhibiting 130 works by Simon Hantaï, half of which have never been shown before.
The Hungarian-born French artist Simon Hantaï (1922-2008) painted blindly, with his hands rather than his eyes. As early as 1960, he began to apply folding as a method of creation.
Folding, knotting, crumpling, not knowing in advance the result of his works, he summarizes his process quite well: "I paint blind, at random, throwing the dice".
In 1982, when his work was recognised and he was chosen to represent France at the Venice Biennale, he preferred to withdraw from public life. With a few rare exceptions, he will no longer exhibit.
